“Almost automatically, his left hand reached out for the flask. He held it to his lips and tilted his head back. The coffee and whisky burned a small fire down his throat. He put the top back on the flask and waited for the warmth of the whisky to reach his stomach.”

Published: Part of For Your Eyes Only, 1960.

Overview: In this short story, 007 takes on a personal mission for M, avenging the deaths of an elderly British couple from Jamaica. Bond steals into Vermont, where he receives some unexpected help from the couple’s daughter.

What does Bond drink?

  • As Bond prepares for his mission, he buys a large aluminum flask, filling three quarters of it with bourbon and the rest with coffee.
  • After Bond gets his first look at the house in the valley where Von Hammerstein and his men are staying, he eats and takes a drink from his flask.
  • After Bond first encounters Judy Havelock, he offers her a drink from his flask, saying “Sit down and have a drink of this—firewater and coffee.” She drinks deeply, and hands the flask back with a grudging “Thanks.”

It’s not just for happy hour anymore: Bond uses his flask of bourbon and coffee to disinfect Judy’s bullet wound.

Other people’s drinks: Von Hammerstein stages a little shooting contest for his Cuban gunmen, and throws two empty bottles of champagne up into the air over the lake.

Total: One. At least one drink from his flask of bourbon and coffee.
