007: “I mean sir, who would pay a million dollars to have me killed?”
M: “Jealous husbands, outraged chefs, humiliated tailors! The list is endless!”

Overview: Agent 007 goes pistol to pistol with Francisco Scaramanga, the world’s most notorious assassin. The vodka martini continues its six-year hiatus.

What does Bond drink?

  • In the Beirut cabaret, Bond has a glass of red wine on the table in front of him. (The bald heavy behind him has a glass of champagne or white wine.) During the fight in Saida’s dressing room, one of the thugs grabs a bottle of champagne from a window sill and hits Bond over the back, smashing the bottle.
  • At the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong, Bond carries a wooden ice bucket with a bottle of champagne and two glasses, which he uses to convince a bellman to let him into Andrea’s room. Later, he brings the bottle and glasses into her bedroom, popping the cork and pouring two drinks. When Andrea agrees to take the golden bullets to Scaramanga (who is supposed to be at the Bottoms Up Club), Bond hands her a glass and says “Let’s drink to that. Bottoms up?” They clink glasses and are about to drink when the scene ends.
  • When Bond joins Goodnight at the hotel’s outdoor nightclub for a drink, the waiter is pouring two glasses of what appears to be sparkling white wine (Bond's glass is seen fizzing). When Bond asks about the bottle, the waiter presents it and says, “With the compliments.” Bond, reading the label, asks quizzically “Phuyuck?” The waiter replies, “’74, sir” (remember, the film was made in 1974). As Bond and Mary taste their drinks, they both make odd faces. He then tells her, “I approve.” Mary asks incredulously, “You do?” Bond adds, “Oh, not the wine, your frock.” As the scene turns romantic, Bond proposes “A toast—del hora y para el momento que vera. To this moment, and the moment yet to come.” They clink glasses. Later, when Bond returns to his hotel room, he mockingly remarks to himself, “Phuyuck.” (By the way, the label says Phuyuck is produced by the Anand Products Co. Ltd., Bangkok, Thailand.)
  • When Bond lands on Scaramanga’s beach, Nick Nack greets him with a bottle of Dom Perignon and a single glass on a tray. The pint-sized henchman announces “Dom Perignon soixante-quatre” (’64). Bond replies, “I prefer the ’62 myself.” Scaramanga shoots the cork off the bottle, dousing Nick Nack in champagne.
  • When Bond and Mary have lunch with Scaramanga, there is a bottle of red wine on the table, which Nick Nack later pours into silver goblets. Bond remarks “Excellent. Slightly reminiscent of a ’34 Mouton.” Scaramanga replies “Then I must add it to my cellar” (and uses his golden pen to make a note about the wine on a pad). Later, Scaramanga raises his glass and says, “To us, Mr. Bond. We are the best.”
  • On Scaramanga’s junk, Nick Nack throws at least 12 bottles from the wine rack at Bond.

Other people’s drinks:

  • During the precredits sequence, Nick Nack brings Scaramanaga a silver tray with a bottle of Moėt champagne in an ice bucket, a large bottle of Guinness Stout, two beer glasses, and a bucket of oysters. Nick Nack then pops the champagne, which overflows down the side of the bottle into the bucket. Scaramanga drinks the beer as he relaxes in his chair on the beach. (It’s also possible Scaramanga is drinking a Black Velvet, a mixture of Guinness and champagne.)
  • Scaramanga has two well-stocked bars (and accompanying wine racks), one in his island lair, the other on his junk. Nick Nack’s control center is located above the bar in Scaramanga’s home.
  • At the Bottoms Up Club, the topless serving girl fixes a drink (with ginger ale) for Gibson.

Memorable quotes:

Bond: “A midnight snack might be just the thing.”
Goodnight: “I’ll keep the wine properly chilled.”

Product placement: Bottles of Guinness beer, Moėt and Dom Perignon are all clearly visible. Tabasco® pepper sauce makes the first of two Bond appearances.

By the book: Based on The Man with the Golden Gun (1965).

Total: Four. Two glasses of red wine, a glass of champagne, and a glass of sparkling white wine.
